Summary: Can't find anything better
Comment: I bought this rotisserie not realizing that it was exactly the same as the old much-hated OEM rotisserie from Weber, only slightly bigger. When I opened the box, I almost sent it back immediately. My problem with the former rotisserie was that the stupid anemic screw clamps were not strong enough and it invariably dumped my food out.
I decided to give it a shot, though, and read the instructions carefully. The instructions and illustrations are woefully inadequate (as usual for most products), but it was easy enough to figure out from context. The thing I think I missed with my last go-round with this product was the idea of rotating the retaining forks to fit the meat; something that is implied but not stated in the instructions.
This time I was very careful to utilize all degrees of freedom available to me in positioning the retaining forks. I tested it with a 5.25-lb. duck. I can report up front that the duck survived the encounter without falling out of the basket.
Although the duck did not fall out, the adventure was not without problems. I was paranoid so I was checking the rotisserie at least every 10 minutes. One time I walked out and notice that the rotisserie was not turning at all. It turned out that the drive rod, which had been buried into the motor up to the hilt at the start, had come completely out of the motor. I subsequently noticed this tendency repeatedly, though never to the extent of coming all the way out again. Still, it meant I had to basically sit there and watch the thing the entire time to ensure it didn't happen again.
So that is my report after one use: duck did not even hint at falling out of basket, so happy there, but rod has a tendency to extract itself from motor, so not really comforting when one might want to do a long slow cook with something like a large roast or a turkey.
Next time I'm going to try artificially raising the legs of the grill on the non-motor side to make gravity aid me in keeping the rotisserie shaft inside the drive motor. I'll report on how that goes.
